Our Lady of Lake University’s literary journal, The Thing Itself, seeks work that speaks to issues of social justice for Issue 46. We want unpublished work in the following genres: fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, short graphic fiction, cartoons, and visual art. Ideal submissions should push boundaries of form and content and create dialogue about the human condition. We look forward to seeing your work!

Guidelines:

fiction/nonfiction—5,000 word, max

Poetry—three poems, max

Visual: three pieces, max

Deadline to submit is December 14, 2018, via Submittable.

Fiction

Editors seek fiction pieces of less than 5,000 words. Submissions in any genre are encouraged as long as some aspect of social justice is present.

Poetry

Editors seek socially conscientious poetry which resists institutionalized models of oppression to elevate marginalized voices and their advocates. Please send 1-3 poems in English, Spanish, Spanglish, or all.

Nonfiction

Editors seek nonfiction submissions up to 5,000 words. Nonfiction can include personal narratives, lyric essays, and flash nonfiction (up to two pieces, 800 words each). We emphasize social justice, so please keep that in mind when submitting.

Visual Art

Editors seek all stripes of visual artists (that includes you, cartoonists and photographers) to submit visual art. We accept national and international submissions.
