The Thing Itself
There are presently no open calls for submissions.
Our Lady of Lake University’s literary journal, The Thing Itself, seeks work that speaks to issues of social justice in the time of Covid-19 for Issue 48. We want unpublished work in the following genres: fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, graphic writing, cartoons, and visual art. Ideal submissions address the following issues or other issues pertaining to social justice and Covid-19 and create dialogue about the human condition.

- Mental Health
- Isolation/ Quarantine
- Elections
- Education/ Teaching
- The Economy
- Essential Workers/ Businesses
- Domestic Violence
- Health Care inequalities
Guidelines:
fiction/nonfiction—5,000 word, max
Poetry—three poems, max
Visual: three pieces, max
Deadline to submit is December 14, 2020, via Submittable.
Fiction
Editors seek fiction pieces of less than 5,000 words. Submissions in any genre are encouraged as long as some aspect of social justice is present.
Poetry
Please send 1-3 poems in English, Spanish, Spanglish, or all.
Nonfiction
Editors seek nonfiction submissions up to 5,000 words. Nonfiction can include personal narratives, lyric essays, and flash nonfiction (up to two pieces, 800 words each).
Visual Art
Editors seek all stripes of visual artists (that includes you, cartoonists and photographers) to submit visual art. We accept national and international submissions.
